About Middle Way Musings
Hi, welcome
I am a Western European Buddhist monk currently residing in a monastery in Northern India. Middle Way Musings began as a blog and has grown into a small collection of projects: essays, wikis, interactive tours and translations, all approached through the lens of the Madhyamaka school of Buddhist philosophy.
My Journey
My path to monasticism wasn’t straightforward. With a background in science and technology, I spent over a decade founding and volunteering with organisations focused on social issues. My career was thriving - I had progressed rapidly through university and professional life, achieved considerable success, and experienced much of what the world offers. However, I gradually recognised that I was chasing after fleeting satisfactions, pursuing one goal after another without finding lasting fulfilment. Buddhism, which had been present in my life since childhood, offered a different perspective on what constitutes a meaningful existence. This realisation led me to fully commit to the monastic path.
Now, as a full-time monk and student at a Tibetan Monastic University following the Nalanda Tradition, I’m documenting this journey—both the profound insights and the everyday experiences of monastic life.
Why Madhyamaka?
As someone with a scientifically-orientated mind, I found in the Madhyamaka (Middle Way) philosophy a rigorous approach to understanding reality that complemented and extended beyond what empirical science alone could offer. This school of thought, with its emphasis on avoiding extreme views and understanding emptiness, provides tools to examine both materialistic assumptions and spiritual claims.
The term “Madhyamaka” itself comes from Sanskrit: madhya meaning “middle,” ma meaning “most,” and ka functioning as an adjective suffix.
What You’ll Find Here
Writings is where it all started: reflections on Buddhist philosophy and logic, the experiences of Western monastic life in an Eastern tradition, the intersection of science and spirituality, and the occasional poem.
Wikis are my working notes turned into reference material. The Pramāṇa Wiki covers the Buddhist theory of knowledge and logic, and the Madhyamaka Wiki covers the Middle Way philosophy of Emptiness. More subjects will follow as my studies progress.
Journeys To The West is an interactive way to explore the ancient Buddhist world: follow the pilgrims who documented it, or take a tour of Nālandā and Bodhgayā.
Translations of root texts from the three Piṭakas, rendered into English as I study them.
Offering Bowl is the non-profit we run connecting sponsors with monastics. If you find anything here useful and wish to support monastic life, that is the place to do it.
Purpose
My intention is simple: to share perspectives that might otherwise remain inaccessible due to language, cultural, or financial barriers. I hope these projects serve as a bridge between traditional Buddhist scholarship and contemporary thinking.
I don’t claim to be an authority — just a practitioner documenting his study and practice. Some of it is scholarly, some personal. All of it is offered in the spirit of exploration rather than definitive answers.
Welcome to Middle Way Musings.
